Neidin Bowls Club

Most of our members were glued to the TV watching the World Indoor Bowling Championships. The women’s final saw Catherine Rednall aged 19 defending her World Title which she won in 2013. Laura Thomas aged 29 from Wales was the winner. It was a great final and the skill of both contestants was breath taking. The ages of the finalists belies the claim from some people that bowls is a sport for old people! Catherine Rednall began bowling as a 5 year old with her family.
In the men’s final Andy Thompson ranked 4th in the world won his ninth World Title beating 3 times world champion Andy Thompson in a closely fought match. Most people don’t appreciate the level of skill involved in the game. It’s an ideal sport for men and women who are retiring from more robust sports.
Neidin bowlers continue to improve and 4 teams have been entered in the Sean Chairde Kerry League which is just getting underway. Teams from Killorglin, Castleisland, Beaufort, Fossa will be encountered over the coming months with finals taking place in July.
Nearer to home, Sneem is the latest area to set up an indoor bowls club. Neidin bowlers have played friendly games with Sneem and the experience was enjoyed by all. It’s great to see the sport growing.
