Not wanting to put a hex on anything but the weather but ‘the smell of fresh cut grass is filling up my senses’ which means football, hurling and lots of it, club and county.
There were some very wintery days to be endured during the East Kerry League but it paid off with a win in the division 2 final over Scartaglen. We were lucky in that Scarts’ pitch was out of action so we got a home game for that final for which our pitch was again in great shape.
Lovely sunshine for final but the match probably lacked for a competitive edge and we ran out easy winners, 1-13 to 1-4, Mike Randles banging in a fine goal in the course of the first half. Well done to the team and management (Pat O’Connor, John Morgan, Colm Horan), the team look in good shape and a lot of players were used over the games which is what you want coming in to the league (round 1 will have been played as you read this, away to Currow).
Well done to the U12′s who played at half time in the Kerry v Dublin game in Killarney, they managed to play in bright sunshine while in the second half I couldn’t see the pitch for the snow! In the senior game Stephen O’Brien again showed the strength and endeavour that has kept the no. 13 jersey on his back.
Elsewhere the new lights on the top pitch look great and do the necessary in terms of evening training. Thanks to Kenmare Plant Hire in particular and Johnny Fitzgerald Electrical for their help in erecting the new lights and also the club members who (yet again) gave up time to be at the pitch to make sure it was all done.
Club registration continues and should be completed by the end of March so if you need to pay your membership contact any officer of the club. The club’s Lotto is doing well but needs your continued support and many of you loyalists also entered the Forecast competition – an elite group of 15 got Cheltenham bang on and by now the Six Nations will have pushed more people onto that leaderboard. Should make for an interesting sporting year!!
