image1Our annual 5-A-Side took place from Thursday July 23rd to Monday August 3rd. It was an action packed few days with 12 men’s and 3 women’s teams fighting it out to be crowned champions.
The ladies Final was played on Thursday July 30th between Maj’s and The Coachmans. Maj’s started well with a goal by Majella O’Sullivan which has to go down as goal of the tournament. Sadly it wasn’t enough to inspire her team and The Coachman’s soon took control with a couple of goals, firstly from Betty Cremin and the second from Michelle O’Sullivan Casey. The second half continued as the first ended with more Coachman’s goals and ended up 5-2 winners. Player of the tournament went to the impressive Karina O’Connor.
The Men’s Reserve Final was played between The Stonebusters and PF McCarthy’s. This game was tightly contested for most of the first half but it was Dan Cahalane that made the breakthrough for the Stonebusters giving them a 1-0 lead at halftime. The second half was a different story with The Stonebusters only having goals on their minds and ended up 4-0 winners. Reserve Player of the tournament went to Dan Cahalane.
The Premier Final was a tactical affair between Kenmare Ice-cream and Turf Nuts with both sides having already played out an nil all in the group stages. It was Kenmare Ice-Cream who started the brighter though and had a few good chances before Turf Nuts even knew they were in a game. The first goal finally came and it was Kenmare Ice-cream who broke the deadlock with a neat interplay down the left wing creating enough space for Denis Cronin to hit a first time effort beyond Micheal Munnelly in the Turf Nuts goal. The first half ended at 1:0 with both sides getting additional chances. Kenmare Ice-cream put themselves within touching distance of the premier trophy when Cathal Granville made space in the box and calmly to the net 2:0 to the Ice-cream. Turf Nuts pulled a goal back within minutes through Jason O’Shea and the game was back up for grabs, both sides had good opportunities to add more goals but Kenmare Ice-cream held out for the win.
Premier player of the tournament was Denis Cronin.
