Senator Mark Daly reports…

rish National Anthem Bill. One of the first issues I’ve brought in the final term of this Seanad sitting is the government’s failure to introduce a bill to protect the national anthem. The copyright for the anthem officially expired 2012 and they have failed to deal with the issue despite its promises. In this historic year of 2016 the government needs to act to avoid it being used in an inappropriate manner. The National Anthem Copyright and Related Rights (Amendment) Bill would provide open-ended protection so we wouldn’t find ourselves in this position again.

Smoking in Cars with Children Banned. A ban on smoking in cars where children are present has come into effect in the Republic of Ireland on New Year’s Day 2016. Myself and Independent Senators John Crown and Jillian Van Turnhout brought the legislation before the Seanad in a year ago but Gardaí were given time to work out how it would be enforced. In years to come, we will find it strange that this measure did not happen a long time ago as smoking causes more deaths than suicide, alcohol and cocaine, and children exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to have cancer in later life.
