Blackwater Women’s/Drama Group premier ‘Going for the Boat’

The Blackwater Women’s/Drama Group will premier their original three act play, ‘Going for the Boat’ in the old Dance Hall Blackwater on Friday 19th of May. The group of local actors are proud to present their seventh original play which is set in Blackwater in 1950. The theme is emigration and how it impacted on family life and the dreams of young people. Full of fun, poignancy and the reality of leaving the home place the play brings focus to the issues of the day; the search for employment, struggles of land ownership, the ‘American Dream’ and London where the streets were paved with ‘gold’.
Each year the group bring entertainment to the area and are fully supported by the local community who fill the Dance Hall for every performance, some members of the audience even making repeat visits. For the past three years the group have also been writing individual short plays which they perform during the winter months, while work on the annual production continues. The plays engage spectators with drama, music and song and also the opportunity for audience participation. Every play is documented by local filmmaker Mary O’Leary; lighting is managed by Johnny Fitzgerald who this year will be supported by Matty O’Sullivan and stage management is supervised by Ingrid Koefoed
Hosted by Teddy and Mary O’Neill the actors meet every Wednesday evening in the Blackwater Tavern to create a story line, improvise dialogue and generate the final scripted play; the process is directed by writer and photographer Eileen O’Leary. The support and funding for this community development initiative has been given by Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB). Community Education Facilitator, Michelle Anne Houlihan, feels that the Blackwater Women’s Group is a model of good practice that performs a vital role in the area. Without her ongoing support the group would be unable to provide the annual theatre shows. Kerry County Council have approved an Arts Grant to support the production.
The actors look forward to performing ‘Going for the Boat’ and welcoming the local community whose support they greatly appreciate. Come along for an evening of unforgettable entertainment, a chance to laugh and a chance to reminisce. The play will run for three nights, Friday 19th Sat 20th & Sun 21st May. Tickets will cost €10 and must be pre-booked as seating is limited. To secure your place in plenty of time, please phone The Blackwater Tavern now on 064-6682003 to book your tickets.
