Kenmare Locality Animal Welfare Society

It has been a busy and successful year so far for KLAWS with us taking in and caring for, many unwanted pets and strays. Each cat and dog has received medical care, their injections and has been spayed and neutered, so this is why any monetary support that we receive from the Public it greatly appreciated. Whether it is buying goods at the KLAWS Cabin Charity Shop, putting coins in our collecting tins, giving money to the street collectors or sponsoring a page on the KLAWS calendar, every cent and euro is used to help the animals. Thank you for your continued support.
Since the last A.G.M. in 2016, with regards to how donations have been used, KLAWS have taken in 101 dogs and pups, and 200 cats and kittens. 59 of those cats were Trap Neuter Release (TNR) which is a policy carried out by most Animal Welfare groups with feral cats as they are usually un-rehomable. However we did find a few farm homes for some of our TNR’s who have now got jobs being local rat catchers. By spaying the cats the important thing is, that it reduces the number of feral cat colonies which is an important part of KLAWS’s work. Not only did we rehome a large amount of our dogs here in Ireland, we also succeeded in sending 66 of the dogs & pups to the U.K. It is important that we work with other rescues here and over there, as good homes are found for our strays, with house checks carried out prior to re-homing, to ensure they find their “Forever” homes.
Dogs Trust Ireland and U.K are working on a project at the moment called ‘Be Dog Smart’. We all think that our dogs are our lovable pets but you have to remember that they are related to the Wolf, going back hundreds of years. So it never hurts to be mindful of the dog by following their tips and advice. This advice hopefully will keeps children aware and respectful of their dogs.
Beware of disturbing dogs that are eating or sleeping.
Even if for fun, don’t ever tease a dog please.
Don’t approach a dog with no owner around.
Only stroke a dog when the owner says “Yes, you can”
Get the dog to sniff your hand first, then stroke gently.
Strange dog approaching? Stand still, look away, cross your arms
(Do the X-Factor!).
Move calmly and quietly around any dog.
All that hugging and kissing, you might like it, but dogs do not!
Remember all dogs have teeth.
Treat dogs with respect and they will respect you!
