2 MG_8962Congratulations to Cailie Murphy, Gortamullen, Kenmare, a 2nd year student at NUIG who has made the shortlist as a nominee for the much coveted 2019 National Student Media Award. Cailie who is a fluent Irish speaker is currently studying Cumarsaid agus Gaeilge at the Galway University. She along with some of her class mates developed, scripted, hosted, edited and produced a one hour radio show which aired every week on Flirt FM. Their show, Caoi Caointe, has made it through the short-listing process, to reach the Top 5 in its category; Iriseoireacht tri Ghaeilge (Raidio). The awards ceremony will take place in the Aviva in Dublin next Thursday night, 11th April.
Cailie is no stranger to Journalistic awards; having won the inaugural Kevin Casey Award for Young Sports Journalists on Radio Kerry with an article she wrote entitled “You Can’t Put a Price on Passion” back in 2017. As part of her prize she won a week’s taster course on radio production in Radio Kerry where she received invaluable hands on experience.
Cailie attributes her love of radio to the late, great Weeshie Fogarty, with whom she struck up an unlikely friendship, after approaching him for advice on her career choice, when she was only 14! He took her under his wing and went above and beyond to help her in every way he could, even inviting her to co-host Terrace Talk with him back in 2015.
Cailie hopes to pursue a career in the promotion and development of the Irish Language and Culture, once she graduates her course.
