Kenmare Rowing and Boat Club annual regatta draws biggest ever attendance

Throngs of spectators gathered on Kenmare Pier on Sunday July 27th. While the weather was windy at the beginning, the day calmed and the sun shone out brilliantly. Crews from Workman’s Rowing Club and Flesk Valley (Killarney) and Castletownbere travelled for the day’s events. Racing began at 1:30pm and Kenmare Novice Girls won the first race.
The highlight of the day was the Junior Mens’s Race where six crews competed, Castletownbere, Flesk Valley and Workman’s and three Kenmare crews. In this race was ‘The Johnny Touhy Head to Head’ which consisted of two new crews that made their debut in the water this year. The ‘Goulane Crew’ as our MC Cllr. Dan McCarthy referred to them; Mike Donavan, Heink Offereins, Conor Daly and Vincent Coakley and cox Pádraig Hanley and Johnny’s second crew, Seán O Regan, Micheál Price, Seán O Brien, Colm Horgan and cox Jimmy Healy rowed with determination and heart to the finish line. Flesk Valley took gold in this race and Castletownbere came second.
Club of the day was Workman’s Rowing Club from Killarney.
A huge crowd gathered for the duck race at the front of the pier. There was great excitement as ‘Julia the duck’ was released into the water by Jerry Hanley. Peter Offereins succeeded in catching ‘Julia’.
We were delighted to have had Leonie Hamel in attendance; she has competed in World and European Rowing Championships. Leonie’s mother is our own Colette McCarthy (John R) from Main Street and her father Harry is from Tralee. Leonie gave a demonstration with her cousin Emily Cronin and Georgia O Brien in our new single sculls.
We thank Very Rev. Fr. Tom Crean and Revd. Michael Cavanagh for attending and blessing the boats. We are most grateful to our sponsors and supporters and to everyone who helped make the day such a success.
