Kenmare residents Keith and Mel Maloney were already well known to locals for the excellent pizza they created in the food truck that they started after the loss of employment that came in the first wave of the pandemic.
Talking to the Kenmare News Keith said, “I lost my brother to kidney disease around this time too and we thought it would be a good idea to work together closely as a family unit. Kenmare has been very good to us and we established really quickly from our stand in the market place opposite where our new business is now located.
“We also traded in Glengarriff at Quills landmark outdoor food market and became part of the fabric of this market which runs from St Patrick’s Day until the end of the season. We enjoy a good local following on the Beara peninsula and throughout West Cork and have been voted best food truck in publications locally! Something we are really proud of.”
However, despite all this success, they missed their customers in Kenmare and decided the best option was to open their own place close to where they traded originally – and Boxed Kenmare was born.
This wonderful new restaurant is a great addition to casual dining offering simple yet delicious woodfired pizza and side dishes with many of their ingredients and toppings coming from Italy to offer as close a meal as you can get to the Neapolitan pizza, fast becoming one of their most popular menu choices.
Marley Coffee, owned by Bob Marleys son Rohan, that they freshly brew is fast picking up a strong local following as are the Italian soft drinks they offer.
Fabulous cakes and confectionary are made in house or by a number of local cake bakers whom they are proud to support.
“I am really delighted to see so many returning faces in our new restaurant and it’s wonderful to see people of all generations come in have a pizza or coffee and enjoy the new space which we have created,” Keith concluded
Boxed is open from 10am seven days a week, with late opening on weekend nights for dine in and takeaway. See you there!
